Understanding your journey

Yoga is a journey to bliss and self realisation. Together and with practice, we can
find your own journey in these 8 steps:

Steps 1 and 2: yamas and niyamas offer ethical codes of conduct towards yourself and your community, positive interactions with your environment, and the people you meet.

Step 3: Asana is the physical practice of yoga relating to the body. A series of poses including standing, seated, backward extensions, twists, and inversions.

Step 4: Pranayama explores controlled breathing patterns. These breathing patterns are experienced within asana practice – each asana requiring you to breath in varying degrees of depth or speed. In pranayama, we consciously learn of the breath, what our bodies have already experienced in asana. It is performed sitting or supine and directs the energy inward.

Step 5: Pratyahara – a natural evolution from pranayama and translates as ‘detachment of the senses’. By learning to withdraw from the stimulation provided by the senses, the mind becomes quiet.

Steps 6, 7 & 8: Dharana, Dhyana & Samadhi – Dharana or concentration, the ability to hold attention on a single thought which flows naturally into Dhyana – meditation. A prolonged state of quietness – the space behind conscious thought. When we are stable in our bodies, sustain a freedom from attachment to the senses, and experience quiet and peace in the mind, we reach Samadhi – self realisation.

This eighth limb of yoga is often referred to as a state of bliss or enlightenment, but in fact, self and realisation are closer descriptions. Samadhi is to realise the life in front of you, as it is, without judgment or conditioning to likes, dislikes, pain or pleasure.

A place where you are relieved of attachment to one aspect of life. It is best felt through the heart than the head.

This is where the bliss lies.
